반딧불이 생태체험, 내년엔 함께해요

 한국일보 주간한국에 기후위기 칼럼을 연재하고 처음 맞는 연말이다. 토론토 생태희망연대(hnet2050.org)의 지난 한해 활동을 돌아보고 내년을 계획해 본다.

 HNET(Hope Network for the Ecosystem)은 2022년 1월, 필자가 운영하는 생태농장을 통해 모인 40여명의 동지들 중 7명이 의기투합해 조직을 만들어3월에 정부(국세청)에 등록신청을 했고 8월부터 정식 채러티(Charity) 인증을 받았다. 채러티는 매년 재정 집행을 전문 회계사를 통해 정부에 보고하고 문제가 있을 경우 정부는 채러티의 자격을 박탈할 수 있다. 이사회의 일탈적인 씀씀이가 있어서는 안될 뿐 아니라 정부에 등록할 때 신청한 원래의 목적에 맞도록 안전장치가 있는 것이다. 첫해에 본 단체의 재정 집행 내역은 국세청 홈페이지에 공개돼 있다 (www.canada.ca/charities-giving).

 HNET은 2022년 첫 해에 약 7천 달러의 기부금을 받았다. 적지 않은 금액이다. 많은 분들이 힘을 보탰다. 올해는 12월25일 현재 9천여 달러가 들어왔다. 이 가운데 정부 등록비(변호사비 등), 교육 강사비, 홍보비 등으로 여러 행사에 지출돼 현재 약 7천 달러 정도가 은행에 남아 있다. 주로 연말에 집중되는 이 기부금은 내년 한해 행사를 위한 종자가 되는 것이다.

 주변에서 어떤 분들은 “환경단체라면 정부나 기업의 펀딩을 받아 행사를 하면 더 좋지 않겠느냐”고 제안한다. 물론 그러면 재정은 더 넉넉해 지겠지만 신청 자체가 쉽지 않고 이후 백업 자료를 정리해 제출하기엔 우리처럼 봉사자들로만 이뤄진 작은 단체가 감당하기엔 버겁다. 게다가 정부나 기업체 지원을 받게 되면 그들의 반기후적인 행동을 비판을 하는데 자기 검열을 해야 할지도 모른다. 그럼에도 어느 시점이 되면 이런 내용을 종합검토해 신청할 수도 있을 것이다.

 우리 단체는 첫 출범 당시 7명의 이사로 구성돼 정부에 등록했으나 개인적인 사정으로 몇 분이 사임, 현재는 5명의 이사진이 운영한다. 우리 ‘독수리5남매’는 지구를 지키는 큰 일을 하지는 못하더라도 최선을 다해 캐나다 한인사회에 작은 발자국을 남기려 한다. 행사를 앞두면 매주 한두차례 모임을 갖고 기획 준비하기도 한다. 내년엔 몇 분이 더 이사로 참여해 줄 것도 기대하고 있다. 회원은 현재 우리 단체 방향에 동의하고 힘을 주는 110여명으로 늘었다. 카카오톡 단체방에 모인 이들이 모두 회원이다. 이 방에 들어오고 나가는 것에는 아무런 제약이 없다. 회비를 내는 이들만 회원으로 해서 좀 더 단단한 조직을 만들자는 의견도 있지만 굳이 닫힌 그룹으로 운영하기 보다는 한 명이라도 더 함께 하자는 뜻에서 일단 이대로 가고 있다. 대신 이사들이 한 발 더 뛰고 자원자들의 활발한 참여로 여러 행사들이 잘 이뤄졌다.

 HNET의 활동은 크게 2가지 방향이다. 우선 교육이다. 기후위기란 단어를 들어보지 않은 사람이 없지만 여전히 기후위기가 인간이 배출한 탄소 때문이라는 과학자들의 결론을 신뢰하지 않는 사람들이 30% 안팎이다. 또 그것을 알지만 위기를 완화하기 위해 쓰레기 분리수거만으로 만족하는 등 현실을 오해하는 이들도 제법 많다. 그래서 연간 두세차례 온/오프라인 세미나를 진행한다.

 또다른 방향은 생태 체험을 통한 자연과의 교감이다. 기후위기는 결과적으로 생태계에 제 6의 대멸절을 야기하기 때문에 생태적 체험은 이를 보호하고 지키려는 의지를 더욱 강화시켜 준다. HNET과 함께 토론토 인근에서 필자가 운영하는 50에이커의 Genesis Eco Forest가 이를 위한 생태체험마당이다. 이곳에서 올해에도 반딧불이와 춤추는 밤, 멕시코로 철새처럼 이동할 멸종위기종 제왕나비 기르기 및 식별표 달아주기, 들꽃과 함께 걷기, 겨울 숲 체험하기, 어린 나무 심고 가꾸기 등의 다양한 활동들이 이어질 예정이다. 단체방에 가입하면 빠지지 않고 행사 공지를 받을 수 있다.( https://open.kakao.com/o/gy7UP9ae). 이메일(hnet2050@gmail.com)

HNET raises over $8,000 to expand education, including firefly ecology experience

It’s the end of the year and my first year writing a column on the climate crisis for The Korea Times. Toronto’s Hope Network for the Ecosystem(hnet2050.org) looks back on the past year and plans for the coming year.
HNET (Hope Network for the Ecosystem) was founded in January 2022 by seven of the 40 comrades I met through my ecological farm, and we applied for registration with the government in March and received official charity status in August. Charities are required to report their finances to the government every year through a professional accountant, and if there are any problems, the government can revoke the charity’s status. There are safeguards in place to ensure that there is no mismanagement by the board of directors and that the organization stays true to its original purpose when registering with the government. The organization’s financial disclosures for the first year are publicly available on the IRS website (www.canada.ca/charities-giving).
HNET received about $7,000 in donations in its first year in 2022. That’s a lot of money. Many people have stepped up to the plate. This year, as of December 25, we have received over $9,000, of which about $7,000 is still in the bank, having been spent on various events, including government registration fees (such as lawyers), educational speakers, and publicity. These donations, which are mainly concentrated at the end of the year, are the seeds for next year’s events.
Some people have suggested that it would be better for environmental organizations to get government or corporate funding for their events. Of course, it would give them more money, but the application process and the subsequent backup documentation would be overwhelming for a small group of volunteers like us. Furthermore, if we were to receive government or corporate funding, we might have to self-censor ourselves from criticizing their anti-climate actions, but at some point we might be able to put together a comprehensive review and apply.
Our organization was initially registered with the government with seven board members, but several resigned due to personal reasons, and we are now run by five board members. We, the 5 Eagles, may not be able to do much to save the planet, but we will do our best to leave a small footprint in the Canadian Korean community. We meet once or twice a week to plan and organize events. We hope to have a few more members join the board next year. Our membership has grown to about 110 people who agree with and support our organization’s direction. Everyone in the KakaoTalk(SNS) chatting group room is a member. There are no restrictions on entering or leaving the room. There are some opinions that we should have a more solid organization with only those who pay dues as members, but we don’t want to operate as a closed group, but we want to have at least one more person join us. Instead, the board members stepped up to the plate and volunteers actively participated in various events.
HNET’s activities have two main directions. The first is education. There is no one who hasn’t heard of the climate crisis, but there are still about 30% of people who don’t trust scientists’ conclusions that it is caused by human emissions. There are also quite a few people who are aware of it but misunderstand the reality, such as those who are satisfied with just separating their trash to mitigate the crisis. That’s why we organize online and offline seminars two or three times a year.
Another direction is to connect with nature through eco-experiences. Since the climate crisis will eventually cause the Sixth Apocalypse for ecosystems, ecological experiences strengthen the will to protect and preserve them. The 50-acre Genesis Eco Forest, which I run near Toronto with HNET, is a great example of this. This year’s activities include dancing with fireflies, raising and tagging endangered monarch butterflies that will migrate to Mexico, walking with wildflowers, experiencing a winter forest, planting and tending young trees, and much more. In Vancouver, an ecological hope coalition has also been organized(Vancouver HNET) and holds regular meetings such as monthly park cleaning and walking.
